BOARD HIGHLIGHTS

Partnership Committee Chair, 2004-05

  • Initiated a partnership between the U.W. Madison PEOPLE program to share the services and funding of the Minority Services Coordinator position. The partnership enhances both organizations to prepare minority students as they prepare to enter college.
  • Initiated a meeting with all four high school booster clubs to discuss concerns regarding athletic funding and resources.
  • Initiated a public hearing on an administration proposal to charge for outdoor athletic field usage.
  • Initiated parent and business funded programs such as the Metro Lynx Girls Hockey, JV soccer and drama programs at West that led to a policy change.

Finance and Operations Committee Chair, 2005-06

  • Facilitated MMSD's collaboration with other school districts to meet technology needs.
  • Received a report from programs receiving community services funds: Urban League, Project Bootstrap, Centro Hispano and African American Ethnic Academy.
  • Initiated a communications matrix for the district including televising of all board committees and meetings.
  • Created a subcommittee of the Finance and Operations to study business advertising and sponsorship in the district that initiated a policy change.
  • Assisted in implementing the $100 Budget Process for seeking public input to construct the 2006-07 MMSD budget.
  • Led the placement of cell towers on MMSD property for alternative revenue streams that initiated a policy change.
  • Recommended community services funding for the partnerships of the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute (CHHI), Wisconsin Center for Academically Talented Youth (WCATY), Kajsiab House and Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network-South Central Wisconsin (GLSEN).

Board President, 2006-07

  • Created a process for all board members to actively participate in development of a board agenda. Board committees are at the forefront of process.
  • Developed Board goals for 2006-07 school year. They include: Budget, Equity policy, Suspension/Expulsion/Student Behavior and Measurements for the district's strategic plan.
  • Implemented Wellness and Animals in the Classrooms policy.
  • Assisted in passage of a successful referendum 69% to 31%. The referendum builds a new school in Linden Park, finances an addition to Leopold and refinances existing debt.
  • Completed the evaluation of the Superintendent with the development of goals such as creation of a Math Task Force; development of a plan to promote the MMSD; evaluation of communication to board members and implementation of the Administrative Intern Professional Development Program.
  • Encouraged parent/community involvement in high school redesign process.
